Interview in VoyageLA magazine
Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Lugo.
Mary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a young mom, I started out photography by wanting to capture every moment of my children’s lives. Every event, up until the tiniest of details to remember each occasion. I have my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and I am very proud of my degree, but it also is not as exciting as creating art with my camera. The absolute joy I feel when I deliver photos to each family to remember those tiny hands and feet of a newborn, or the pregnant mama taking maternity photos to remember all the happiness of being pregnant for nine months. Photography for me is to be able to deliver memories that will last a life time.
Has it been a smooth road?
As with any Entrepreneur starting a business can be challenging. I started my business in 2012 mainly by word of mouth. Taking any and all types of photography. My word of mouth clients started to slow down significantly so my challenge was how do I bring new clients to me? I took many online marketing and sales intensive programs by other photographers to help guide me along my path for growth. I pretty much tried every form of online platform to grow my business but it seems that social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram have helped me grow my business the most. Social media is still my most reliable source of gaining new clients.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mary Lugo Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I started out my photography business by taking photos of anyone who asked for portraits. About 3 years ago I began specializing in Maternity and Newborn photography because it was one genre of photography that gave me so much joy. I just love new life and the happiness it brings a family. I still take portraits of families and children but most of my clients today are maternity and newborn clients. I also started offering first birthday cake smash sessions a year ago and 2016 was a year filled with one year old’s tasting and smashing cake for the first time. I have so much fun with those session. My most proud moment comes when returning clients book me 2 and 3 times a year to capture those special moments. It reminds me of when I was a young mom trying to capture every memory.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles area has been my home all of my life. The best part of living in the LA area is there is so many unique and beautiful areas to use as backdrops. You go to the mountains, beaches, and lakes all in about an hour drive. It just doesn’t get any better! I truly love LA and I’m not much of a complainer as I see the beauty in everything but I would have to say the traffic.
